Treasurer Scott Morrison has defeated Peter Dutton and Julie Bishop in the Liberal Party leadership ballot.
Government MPs and Senators elected Scott Morrison to replace Malcolm Turnbull as prime minister. Josh Frydenberg defeated Victorian colleague Greg Hunt and Queenslander Steve Ciobo to be his deputy leader.
Mr Dutton was health minister from 2013 to late 2014 while Mr Hunt served as health minister from early 2017 until his resignation yesterday.
As deputy leader, convention means Mr Frydenberg can choose his portfolio. Mr Hunt could be reappointed to health or another portfolio.
The Department of Health is currently operating without a minister and officials will probably have spent the past 24 hours preparing incoming ministerial briefings.
