A new health adviser for prime minister Malcolm Turnbull with an existing staff member well-known to the private health sector extending their current responsibilities.

Cath Patterson, who joined Mr Turnbull's office several months ago to advise on education, has had health added to her responsibilities.

Ms Patterson previously served as social policy adviser for former prime minister Tony Abbott, having also served as former health minister Peter Dutton's chief of staff.

Ms Patterson has significant expertise in health policy, having served the Department of Health for a number of years, including in a Geneva-based international role. She also served as a health policy adviser in the Howard Government.

She joined Mr Turnbull's personal staff from the department of education.
