Prime Minister Scott Morrison says he will unveil his choice for the next health minister in the early period of the election campaign.
The prime minister announced 21 May as the date for the election at which the Coalition is seeking a fourth term in office.
Incumbent health minister Greg Hunt is retiring from politics after serving over 20 years as the member for the Melbourne-based electorate of Flinders.
Mr Hunt has served as health minister since January 2017.
He has been the third health minister to serve in the Coalition government that was elected in 2013. His predecessors were Sussan Ley and Peter Dutton.
At his media conference announcing the election date and speaking in response to a question about the departure of Mr Hunt and who would serve as health minister in a re-elected Coalition government, Mr Morrison said, “They [voters] will know that fairly soon over the course of about the next week or so.”
