Increases to a large number of Medicare rebates came into effect this week including for 176 GP item numbers.

The items cover a range of services, including health assessments, chronic disease management plans, and mental health services provided by GPs.

Health minister Greg Hunt said the higher GP rebates represent increased government spending on Medicare of $187 million.

"Patients also accessing a mental health service from an allied health professional, such as a psychologist, occupational therapist or social worker will receive a higher rebate," said Mr Hunt.
