Health minister Greg Hunt is expected to announce today that he will not contest the next federal election expected in the first half of next year.

Mr Hunt has been the member of the Victorian seat of Flinders since 2001 and served as health minister since January 2017.

He previously served as the environment minister for three years and then in the industry portfolio for six months.

Reports suggest Mr Hunt will remain in the health portfolio until the next election.

His time in the portfolio has been significantly dominated by the pandemic but he has also overseen reforms of private health insurance, medical device funding, pharmaceuticals and Medicare, as well as ensuring support for mental health and medical research.
